All Iyengar Yoga North County Instructors participate in on-going Iyengar training, workshops, retreats and classes.
Carolyn Belko is the Director of Iyengar Yoga North County. She began teaching in Paris at the Centre de Yoga Paris with Faeq and Corinne Biria. Carolyn studies in Pune, India with the Iyengars regularly, as well as attending intensive retreats in France with the Birias. Carolyn is a devoted student of B.K.S. Iyengar . She has been assessed by him and received Senior Level III Certification. Carolyn is one of the few to conduct Iyengar Yoga Therapeutics Classes. She is faculty of the Iyengar Yoga Training Program sponsored by the Southern California Association and serves as an assessor for certification of Iyengar Yoga teachers. Carolyn’s expertise in guiding students in intensives and workshops helps them in finding a fresh approach in the practice of yoga.
Judy Harper has been practicing Iyengar yoga since 1981 and teaching since 1993. Judy became a certified teacher in 2003. She has taught Monday classes since the North County Iyengar Yoga Center opened in 2003. Her yoga practice has provided the physical and spiritual nourishment to lead an active life of gardening, walking and traveling with her husband John. Sharing the gift of yoga with others and helping them to find a way to incorporate a yoga practice into their everyday life is her main focus.
Pat McLoughlin began her Iyengar yoga practice over twenty years ago. She enjoyed the benefits that weekly yoga classes brought to her and over time she developed her own home practice and eventually trained to become an Iyengar certified instructor. Pat currently holds the Intermediate Junior 1 Level of teacher certification. She continues her own yoga training with senior teachers in San Diego and this summer will make her third trip to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family. Pat is happy to share with others the practice of Iyengar yoga with all of its many benefits in the wonderful community that is Iyengar Yoga North County.
Deanna Cramer graduated from the 3-year Iyengar Teacher Training program last December. She is mentored by Senior Teachers Carolyn Belko, director of IYNC, and Gloria Goldberg, director of the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Center of La Mesa. She’s been teaching kids and youth yoga classes since 2010. Beyond just learning the asanas, Deanna says she’s cognizant of the positive impact yoga brings her students outside of class, whether it be in fostering courage and persistence, or the gift of sharing yoga with others. She encourages her students to let go of any sense that only perfection is expected.
Stanley Williams discovered and began practicing yoga in 1976 while a student at La Salle College in his hometown of Philadelphia. He’s successfully completed the rigorous, as well as in-depth, three-year Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training Program in San Diego. He plans to continue his yoga studies with senior Iyengar teachers Carolyn Belko, Gloria Goldberg and Manuso Manos. Stan’s goal is to teach yoga joyfully in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar with compassion, knowing that true joy comes when a student recognizes his or her own true nature and embraces it fully, which is the very essence of yoga.
Heidi Smith started teaching at the Iyengar center in January 2012. She has been studying yoga since the late 90’s. She met Carolyn about six years ago and recovered from a lower back injury through Carolyn’s guidance in Therapy Class. Heidi has been participating in on-going teacher training at the Iyengar center ever since.
It was Suneel Sundar’s “good fortune” that his first yoga teacher had studied Mr. Iyengar’s method. Seven years later, in 2005, Suneel had become an Iyengar yoga teacher himself. He taught his first class one week after meeting Guruji in Estes Park, Colorado. Suneel’s “day job” is to provide information security for a major payment processing company. He recently was able to move with his wife and 3-year-old daughter back to Encinitas. Previously, Balance is sought throughout Suneel’s life, evidenced in part through his teaching of families and his thoughtful sharing in asana classes Indian mythological lore and stories.
Kimberly Zanger Mackesy has been a yoga teacher since 1999 and a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher since 2012. She first experienced yoga as a young adult, and within a year knew she also wanted to teach. She experimented with every yoga style she could find for two years, until she discovered that Iyengar Yoga is a complete path that contains all the direction she could ever need. Kimberly’s had the honor of studying three times with the Iyengars at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute in Pune, India.
During the 12 years she has been studying Iyengar Yoga, Cynthia Neilson has had the opportunity to study with the Iyengar family and Senior Iyengar teachers at conventions, workshops and weekly study. Currently in her 6th year as a staff instructor at the Iyengar Yoga Center in North County, Encinitas, CA, Cynthia is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor. Cynthia also is the Lead Yoga instructor and coordinator for the Yoga program at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel in Dana Point, which she initiated in 1995.
Ann Richards‘ first Iyengar yoga class was 27 December 1979 in Hawaii —-30 years ago. She has been teaching since 1982 for 28 years. Ann was certified at the Introductory Level in San Diego in 1987. She has continued study with many senior level teachers.
Kathleen Quinn, CIYT is a Certified Intro II Iyengar Yoga Teacher. She has been mentoring and teaching under Carolyn Belko since 2003. She is currently studying for her Intermediate Junior I candidacy in December 2010. Kathleen’s classes are a mix of intensity, enthusiasm and humor. Her love of Iyengar yoga and teaching is clear and brings a “joie de vivre” to her classes.
Ariane Hudson has been teaching yoga in the San Diego area since 1976. She is a longtime member and former board member and President of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Southern California. She was a founding board member and Vice President of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States. She has served as Certification Committee Chairperson for both organizations. Ariane was awarded the Senior Intermediate Level III Iyengar Yoga Teaching Certificate by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar in 1993. Ariane has balanced, as we all do, the demands of family life, the discipline of personal practice and the joy of teaching and service to the yoga community for over thirty years.
